Best news tonight:
Despite a few disappointing local races,
it appears the Dems will again control BOTH houses in NY.
"Democrats are coming back to the majority in the state Senate"
http://www.pressconnects.com/article/20121106/news10/311060092/tight-battle-control-state-senate
Being a registered Green, I cannot get very excited about this,
because most Democrats seem to be fairly mediocre on fracking,
with a few noteworthy exceptions (e.g., Barbara Lifton, Tony Avella).
However it seems clear the Republican Agenda is in this state is
Frack us now, baby. Frack us hard.
So a strong democratic win is a referendum against fracking.
A Democrat Majority in Both Houses means
(I believe) THERE IS A CHANCE we can get some
strong environmental legislation passed this session,
PERHAPS EVEN A BAN BILL!
It's time to THINK BIG people!
This is a complicated thing.
A simple law is easy to undo
should the composition of the electorate change.
I think we should talk about a BIG PUSH
for a rights-of-nature enabling Constitutional Amendment
(CELDF-style) which would BAN AND CRIMINALIZE fracking in NY
and would protect the state for 10 years or more
and be very hard to undo.
Thoughts?
