EMERGENCY ACTION TO SAVE 500,000 NY TREES

As you may have seen today, heavily armed Federal Marshals

were in Susquehanna County today to facilitate cutting down

a family's stand of maple trees used for producing maple syrup.

As you can see from the photos and videos, these Federal Agents were armed with assault rifles, despite the fact that all protests on this land for the last 30 days were peaceful and respectful and non-violent.

Last Thursday, the applicant, Williams Partners, and Cabot Oil and Gas motioned to FERC to begin cutting trees in NY despite the fact this pipeline is not fully authorized, as there are still two outstanding permits.

You can see on the docket, this has been opposed by several NGOs and also the NYS Attorney General Eric Shneiderman:

This authorization from FERC could come as early as tomorrow, so the chainsaws could be cutting trees in NY as soon as Thursday.

If you haven't heard the news, today the Constitution Pipeline Company is proceeding with cutting trees at the Holleran family's maple grove in Pennsylvania. FERC gave the company permission to cut trees along the 25-mile portion of the proposed route in PA despite the fact that NY has not and may never grant permits for the pipeline.

Last week, the Constitution Pipeline Company made a second attempt to get FERC to allow them to cut over 700,000 trees along the remaining 100 miles of the proposed route in NY. The company asked FERC to approve their request by tomorrow Wednesday, March 2nd. Thankfully, yesterday, NY Attorney General Schneiderman weighed in again and demanded that FERC not allow tree cutting in NY while the NY State Department of Environmental Conservation continues its review of the 401 Water Quality Certificate.

In light of these recent events, a group of folks living along the pipeline route crafted this letter to Gov Cuomo and the DEC asking, once again, that NYS reject the 401 Water Quality Certificate immediately.

Tomorrow at 1pm we will hold an emergency press conference at the press room in the Legislative Office Building in the State Capitol to release the letter with landowners from along the pipeline route in PA and NY, including members of the Holleran family.

We will also be launching a social media campaign, #StopFERC, to raise public awareness about FERC's reckless actions, which protect Big Gas and Oil while sacrificing the health, safety and property of the American people. Through this campaign and at the press conference, residents of NY and PA will stand in solidarity, demand that FERC NOT allow tree cutting in NY, and call on Governor Cuomo and the NYSDEC to immediately deny the 401 Water Quality Certificate for the Constitution Pipeline.
